Return To Home Oreo's Story

A beautiful 7 week puppy was dropped off at our shelter. We noticed right away that she had some paralysis in her hind legs. Small and helpless, we took turns holding her, and instantly, it was “love at first sight”! We named her “Oreo”. Our primary vet diagnosed her with a spinal deformity and suggested some specialists. A radiologist confirmed “severe scoliosis”. Both an orthopedic and a neurosurgeon agreed with the previous findings and informed us that surgery would be unsuccessful. Her spinal column never fused in utero, which means that she will never have use of her two hind legs and will also be incontinent.

Fortunately, this adorable little pointer puppy is in no pain whatsoever and has an amazing spirit, in spite of her disability! She scoots around on the floor and plays with our other puppies. What an incredible disposition!!! Who knows...maybe she appreciates the fact that her life was spared and she is in the hands of people who love and care about her!
We have contacted companies that supply "walkers" for disabled dogs. Most recently, we have received two walkers. She is finally mobile! During her growing stages, she will most likely need upgraded walkers to accommodate her size. (Her estimated weight is 40-50lbs.)
Our goal for “Oreo” is a “forever home” with someone experienced in raising a handicapped dog like her.
