Traveling With Your Pet
Traveling
with your four-legged friend can be somewhat "hairy."
By Air:
*Make sure your pet is healthy and current on vaccinations.
Consult your veterinarian as to which shots are required, especially if
you are traveling outside the USA.
*Make your reservations early and ask about weight limits and other
details.
*Small animals can often go in the cabin in a carrier that fits under
the seat. Larger pets must ride in crates in the cargo hold.
(dogs)
*If your pet is nervous, a vet may prescribe anti-anxiety medication,
but never sedate your animal. High altitudes and barbiturates are
a bad mix!
By Car:
*If your pet gets carsick, ask your vet about drugs that might
help. Keep the pet in an animal carrier or in a harness during
travel.
*Take breaks every few hours, and never leave your pet alone in the
car....especially in extremely hot or cold weather.
*If you have little time to spend with your pet on a trip, consider
leaving it at home with a pet sitter who you consider trustworthy.
*If opting for a pet sitter, make sure they are familiar with your pet's
habits, schedules for gardeners, utility people, etc.
Imagine the warm welcome when you return home!
